- Gloomy Sunday - Hungary, Germany Romance/Drama Like all good works of art, this film raises questions not easily answered. As the turmoil of WW II engulfs Hungary, a restaurant owner hires a pianist. Both men love Ilona, then plot is further complicated when a regular customer, an SS colonel, also pursues her. “Gloomy Sunday” was a love song, popular in prewar Europe, one version recorded by Billy Holiday. Based loosely on real events. (A marvelous film, don’t be discouraged by the title.) In German, subtitled NR (probably would be an R) 1 hr. 52 min.
